Hi, I’m Shelley,

I’m the founder of Complex Connexions and the creator and facilitator of The Connexions Community.

I’m also the parent of an ADHD/Autistic young person; I understand the challenges and complexities (and joy and love 😍) that come with supporting these children and teens. But in my work as a teacher, tutor and SEN support in a school, I have often witnessed the need for neurodivergent students and their parents to feel more understood and validated.

I realised that the traditional behaviourist approach falls very short when it comes to creating genuine connection with ADHD/ Autistic young people. Guided by the principles of neuroscience and the understanding of how our nervous systems influence behaviour, I shifted my focus towards celebrating strengths, nurturing connection, and creating safe and supportive environments.  This was hugely valuable for my own son, as well as the other children I work with.

My goal is to enable parents and ADHD/Autistic young people to understand behaviour through a brain/body lens, to cultivate calm and connection, and foster a strong sense of acceptance and belonging within the family. When we achieve this, we nurture self-belief and support positive mental wellbeing for our young person as well as the rest of the family.

Join me on this transformative journey, and let’s create a brighter future for our young person, and our families, built on understanding, communication and connection.

After becoming a parent, I completed an NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and have been working in a school for the past 7 years. In addition to this, I served on the Board of Trustees as Treasurer and Administrator for a children’s nursery for 3 years, making use of my strong organisational skills and extensive administrative experience.

I have two sons, aged fifteen and twelve. Both children have additional needs, one with sensory processing issues and the other diagnosed with Autism. I have spent the past 13 years working through various agencies to gain diagnoses and to understand and adopt tools and techniques to ensure my boys achieve the best they possibly can.

Whilst trying to navigate the challenges that raising children with additional needs brings, I have found organisations such as this invaluable and I hope to be able to assist other families facing similar challenges.

With a background in admin, I retrained whilst on maternity leave to be a Teaching Assistant.  I worked in class, delivering small group and 1:1 interventions for 13 years before going back to my roots of admin and moved into my school office.  I recently left that job to work in airport security, as I can now take my holidays outside of peak time!

I have one son who is rapidly approaching 19.  Parenthood, for me, has definitely been challenging – school was not his happy place.

I love getting outside for walks and the odd run, especially Parkrun, and also watching lots of sport.
